Herbicide soil/solution distribution coefficients (Kd) are used in mathematical models to predict the movement of herbicides in soil and groundwater. Herbicides bind to various soil constituents to differing degrees. The universal soil colloid that binds most herbicides is organic matter (OM), however clay minerals (CM) and metallic hydrous oxides are more retentive for cationic, phosphoric, and arsenic acid compounds. Weakly basic herbicides bind to both organic and inorganic soil colloids. The soil organic carbon (OC) affinity coefficient (Koc) has become a common parameter for comparing herbicide binding in soil; however, because OM and OC determinations vary greatly between methods and laboratories, Koc values may vary greatly. This proposal discusses this issue and offers suggestions for obtaining the most accurate Kd, Freundlich constant (Kf), and Koc values for herbicides listed in the WSSA Herbicide Handbook and Supplement.

The Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC), established by Executive Order in 1933 and granted a federal charter in 1948, is authorized to extend nonrecourse loans to farmers who use agricultural commodities from the most recent harvest as collateral. The loan program was designed to foster a more orderly marketing procedure and stabilize agricultural prices and income, but farmers also use this program as both a residual market and a speculation and marketing aid. The amount loaned to a farmer equals the quantity of the commodity pledged as collateral times a fixed per unit value (loan rate) which is announced prior to the production period. Eligibility of a farmer for a CCC loan may require compliance with USDA allotment or set-aside programs and storage of the commodity in a CCC approved facility. The CCC's commodity demand via the loan program is perfectly elastic at the loan rate and farmers can supply as much as they desire. When the loan matures the farmer can either repay it with interest or default on both principal and interest, in which case the CCC assumes ownership of the pledged commodity.

Numerous reports citing experiment data continue to claim advantages in gain rates and feed efficiency for bulls in comparison with steers. Although most experiment data agree about such advantages, magnitudes differ considerably among the reports for good reason. Variations in the design of bull-steer experiments are almost as copious as the number of stations reporting results. Bulls and steers used in any given experiment are generally of comparable age and have been subjected to the same feeding environment, but rations tend to differ among experiments, as do breed, age, and time on feed. Though some researchers feed to a predetermined slaughter weight which may differ for steers and bulls, others feed both on equal number of days. Likewise, because some studies have been designed for carcass comparisons of steers and bulls, they fail to provide critical feedlot performance data such as feed efficiencies. Carcass data may or may not include slaughter weights, dressing percentages, or yield of retail cuts.

Interfacial defects like grain boundaries and phase boundaries play an important role in the mechanical behaviour of engineering alloys. In this work the problem of a crack on a bi-crystal interface is studied at the atomic scale, with the goal of elucidating the effects of varrying interatomic interaction on crack behaviour and to assess the suitability of existing fracture criteria to the anisotropic bi-crystal case. Calculations are performed using the Quasicontinuum (QC) method [1]. Using suitable approximations, some of the existing fracture criteria were used to predict ductile or brittle fracture and compared to the QC results.

The growth records of spongiomorph and colonial skeletons have great potential for revealing the short-term depositional dynamics of ancient shallow marine environments. The utility of such skeletons for understanding the type and frequency of physical disturbance is illustrated by chaetetid-bearing limestones from Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) cyclothems of southeastern Kansas. Individual chaetetids frequently contain growth-interruption surfaces that are marked by clay partings or encrusting overgrowths of epibionts. Such interruptions occur irrespective of the growth form of the chaetetids, although they are more conspicuous in laminar and domical growth forms with ragged margins. Growth forms with smooth margins and fewer interruptions are more commonly high domical to columnar. The latter occur in cleaner carbonates with higher rates of carbonate accumulation and little siliciclastic influx.
Interruption surfaces, which may be accompanied by reorientation of skeletal growth, record significant depositional and erosive events during the life history of the chaetetids. Similar surfaces have been described from a variety of other organisms including stromotoporoids, fistuliporoid and trepostome bryozoans, and favositid corals. In most environments, physical disturbance events of this time scale are invariably destroyed by subsequent bioturbation or current reworking. For this reason, chaetetid skeletons provide a valuable means of inferring the frequency and intensity of physical distubance and the rate of sediment accumulation.
The temporal significance of growth interruptions must be determined before their environmental significance can be assessed. Geometry of calicle growth at these surfaces is critical for recognizing the manner in which growth was reestablished. Colonization by the settling of larvae on a dead surface has a much different implication than rejuvenation from surviving calicles. The former could occur on long dead skeletal hardgrounds, and the latter indicates physical disruptions during the life of a single chaetetid. Clay partings and clay-filled calicles record mud burial events resulting in partial mortality, followed by rapid rejuvenation and overgrowth of the sediment. Encrustation of growth-interruption surfaces by auloporid corals, and more rarely bryozoans and stromatolitic algae, indicate prolonged exposure of the skeletal surface and subsequent recolonization. Interestingly, auloporid encrustation appears to be more common in clay-rich carbonates having evidence of more frequent and higher-energy disturbance events. Evidence of dissolution or biocorrosion of the skeletal surface may imply an even longer period of exposure between disturbance and recolonization.
Local development of chaetetid mounds and biostromes also permits larger-scale environmental fluctuations to be recognized. Changes in growth form, typically associated with changes in clay content of the enclosing carbonates, appear to reflect fluctuations in clastic sediment influx and water turbidity. Subtle clay-rich intervals and unconformity surfaces are recognized within chaetetid-bearing units only a few meters thick. The thin sedimentation units thus defined appear to be correlative between outcrops separated by tens of kilometers.
Close examination of spongiomorph and colonial skeletons therefore has the potential to shed light on depositional processes and environmental changes at time scales of tens to thousands of years normally inaccessible to paleoecologists.
